Happy Labor Day

Sept. 7, 2009

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has its own definition of who is “employed.” But, no matter what your status is by the Bureau's standards, you, as a mom, do a lot of work. And, you work hard. Whether you are paid or not, the work you do for your family is of tremendous value. (It’s really too bad, we can’t be fully financially compensated, isn’t it?)

So, this Labor Day, I hope that you can just take a moment to take a step back and admire the fruits of your labor. Think of just one thing (big or small) you do as a mom you are proud of and celebrate it.

This is something I always do in my “Get Your Life Back, Mom” workshops. I always start by asking moms: What’s going right in your life? What are you proud of? What gives you energy?

You see, the moms who take my workshops tend to be both highly talented and deeply caring. They are already doing so many things very well. I’ve noticed right away that they have/had successful professions or work/school/volunteer experiences. And, they take their role of raising their children seriously and do so with passion.

So, if things are generally going well for them, why do they bother taking the workshops?

Often it’s because they want to do what they are already doing even better. Usually moms take my workshops because they want to add more balance in their lives by trying out something new or making a change.

And, what do I do? Well, the one thing I don’t do is lecture them. Most moms are already experts at what works well within their own lives and their families’ lives.

Instead, I have developed have some unique exercises that get moms to quickly and effectively...

  • Focus on their strengths and build on upon them: I strongly believe that trying to “fix” or “correct” weaknesses is an inefficient and ineffective strategy that simply depletes us of our energy.
  • Utilize fully their resources in new and interesting ways: Most of us could use more time, more energy, and more space (both physical and mental).
  • Connect with other moms: We may all be in unique situations, but why reinvent the wheel when we can share and learn from one another?

In the coming weeks, I will do my best to share with you some of the things we do in my workshops. But, the best thing to do is experience it yourself. It’s a series of workshops built from my experience as a researcher, as a mom, and as a coach of other talented and caring moms. We cover a wide range of topics that build upon one another, but this time around you can pick and choose what you want.

If you live in NYC, the next workshop series starts Tuesday, October 6! (See below for more information.) And, if you can’t make the in-person workshops, email me because I will be starting a teleclass series where you can dial in from any phone!

As always, please feel free to share this article with a friend or email me your own thoughts. In fact, why not share with me one thing you do as a mom you are proud of?

Wishing you a blissful end-of-summer,
Stacy
