Knitting

I love to knit. When my children were babies, it wasn't easy to do. Not only was it hard to find the time, but my projects were also too tempting for them to tangle!

I missed knitting and I wanted to knit with others. So, I started a charity knitting group that meets once a week. My dear friends at ESWS Music Together kindly sponsor us by providing us with wonderful space for us to gather once a month. We're a group of women (mostly moms) with big hearts. Come join us. If you don't know how to knit, we'll teach you! (Those who crochet are, of course, welcome too!)

In the past couple of years, we've knit caps for newborns near and far, washcloths for families in Haiti, warm items for chidlren in Afghanistan, and squares for blankets for an orphans in Kenya. Most recently, we've knitted scarves for soldiers.

Here are some pictures of what we've made so far.

Upcoming Charity Knitting Nights

This winter, we are knitting for the Knit-A-Square campaign to help warm AIDS orphans in South Africa. There are 1.9 children whose lives have been compromised by the twin perils of HIV/AIDS and poverty. Many of these children live in shack settlements. Some head up families of their siblings together with other children. Some live alone, without shelter, in hills and dumps around the cities.

We will be knitting 8" squares that will be sewn up into blankets for these children. But, if you prefer to come and work on your own project, you can do so provided you make a monetary donation (amount of your choice) to help cover shipping costs to South Africa. Additional funds collected will be donated to Save the Children.

Date: Thursdays, January 12, February 9, March 8
Time: 7-8:30 p.m.
Location: Center for Family Music, 102 West 75th Street, Garden Level

Instructions on how to knit an 8" square will be provided at the event. Affordable supplies (needles and yarn) will also be available for purchase. If you'd like to use your own yarn, please be sure to specify whether you are donating a wool or an acrylic square.

Light refreshments will be served.

These free events are co-sponsored by ESWS Music Together.

If you don't know how to knit, someone can teach you.
